THE VISIT

It was Saturday around noon when they arrived. Eric did not see his father’s car on the driveway. He checked to see if it was in the garage, which luckily it was not. Maybe they would both be gone, which would be the best thing. He had the key, so he and Karen stepped up onto the porch. He rang the doorbell and waited. Then he knocked two or three times. Finally, his mother, Rose, came to the door.

“I wasn’t expecting you, why didn’t you call?” She asked.

He told her they were on their way out to the Hamptons to see some friends.

“Hamptons, Shmaptoms,” she uttered, and ushered them in with a hand wave. She offered them something to drink, and then went upstairs to resume her chore of folding laundry. She didn’t say a word to Karen. Once out of sight, Karen took a tour of the downstairs, making mental notes as she went from room to room.

After about forty minutes, Eric called up to his mother, “We are leaving.”

“Okay. Bye” she answered.

They didn’t talk about the plan until they got back to Karen’s apartment. Karen started with telling him some of the things she saw, including how close the curtains were to the end table in the den. The downstairs bathroom had a window for easy access. The only thing she didn’t see was a fire alarm on the ground floor. Eric said there was one on the ceiling between the bedrooms upstairs. They both thought it was strange that the house didn’t have one anywhere on the ground floor.

“Maybe there once was one, but knowing my dad, he probably took it down because the beeping annoyed him. Then he forgot to put it back up. There had to be one at some time to pass inspection, I’d think.” Eric commented.

Karen once again claimed that she looked the entire downstairs over and saw none. Then they discussed a timeline, when Eric would be back in his house. He thought obviously Christmas day. Karen said she had made plans to go to Florida sometime between Christmas and New Year’s. She’d put in for that week off. She could leave later the next day after Christmas. He would have time to get the jewelry to her and she’d take it to Florida with her and pawn it.

Although Eric was starting to get scared, he kept thinking how they never gave him a cent. He worked through high school just to have money to pay for art supplies and anything extra he’d want. When other classmates got cars, he still rode the bus to school. He felt so much humiliation and now they owed him.

“I just don’t want to get caught.” Eric admitted

Karen assured him she had watched many shows on T.V. that had break ins and how people got away with it as long as they covered their tracks. “So here’s how you have to do it. I assume Michael and Francine are going to be home for Christmas,” she inquired.
